Mate is a South American herbal that is traditionally consumed from a gourd with a silver straw. Studies in recent years have shown the stimulant present in maté to actually be a form of caffeine. However, your body metabolizes this form of caffeine differently than the caffeine in coffee and true teas. For this reason many people do not experience the racing heart and shaking hands associated with caffeine consumption.
